Choosing a tracking platform for your dealership: 8 things to check

Servers hosting a tracking platform

The platform you choose is the product your clients see every day. Switching later means reconfiguring every tracker and retraining every client — so it pays to choose well from the start. Check these eight things.

1. Does it support the trackers you sell?

Check the exact models and protocols: Teltonika, Concox and GT06-protocol trackers, JT808 dashcams. Ask what happens when you want to sell a new model.

2. Can you manage your own clients?

You need a management panel to create client accounts, add units and users, reset passwords, move units between clients and see which trackers are online — without calling the platform provider for each change.

3. How does billing work?

Look for pricing per unit that matches how you sell — by device type, yearly or with prepaid tokens — and invoices that carry your business details.

4. Is the fuel data accurate?

Fuel monitoring is often what clients pay for. Ask how refills and drains are detected, how sensor noise and slosh are filtered, and whether refills are caught even when a tracker was offline.

5. Is there a good mobile app?

Most of your clients will check their vehicles on a phone. The app should show live tracking, reports and alerts, not just a map.

6. Can it be customised?

Sooner or later a big client will ask for a special report, sensor or integration. A provider that builds its own platform can add it; a reseller of someone else's software usually can't.

7. Is support local?

When a tracker stops reporting on a Friday evening, you want a team in your time zone that knows your market and answers the phone.

8. Is the data safe?

Ask about backups, an audit log of changes, recovery of deleted units, and who can see your clients' data.

Bonus: can it carry your brand?

Your clients should see your company, not your platform provider. Look for white-label: your logo, colours and your own web address on the dashboard, the app, reports and emails.

Data Drive Platform Hosting covers all eight — and white-label: Teltonika, Concox and JT808 support, the CMS Manager, per-unit and token billing, careful fuel detection, a mobile app, custom development, a Nairobi team and an audit log with a 45-day recycle bin.
