Choosing a white-label GPS tracking platform: 8 questions to ask before you commit
The platform you choose becomes the foundation of your tracking business. Your clients will see it every day, your team will run on it, and moving to another one later means migrating every client and device. It is worth taking time to choose well.
Most platforms look similar in a demo. These eight questions help you see the differences that matter.
1. Which devices work, and what if mine isn’t supported?
Your margins depend on buying hardware you can source easily. Ask for the full list of supported trackers, dashcams and sensors, and check that your preferred models are on it. A good provider will also add a new model on request, including its alarms and settings.
2. How white-label is it, really?
Some platforms put your logo in one corner and leave their own name everywhere else. Ask to see your branding on the web app, the mobile app, the report PDFs, the invoices and the web address. Your clients should never have to know who hosts the platform.
3. How do you manage clients and billing?
Running a tracking business on spreadsheets does not scale. Look for a back office that handles clients, units, users and access rights, with per-unit billing, invoices and renewals tied to each device. If you also need sales tools, check whether quotes, stock and job cards are included.
4. Who owns the client relationship and the data?
The provider should never compete with you for your clients. Ask whether you can export client and unit data, what happens to your account if you leave, and whether the contract locks you in for a long term.
5. Can it be customized?
Sooner or later a client will ask for a report, alert or sensor that does not exist yet. Ask who builds it, how long it takes, and whether it becomes a permanent part of the platform or a temporary workaround. A provider that writes its own software can usually respond faster than a reseller of someone else’s.
6. Where is the data hosted and how is it protected?
Ask where the servers are, how often data is backed up, whether restores are tested, and whether every change is recorded in an audit log. Clients trust you with their vehicles’ locations, so you need clear answers.
7. What support do you get?
When a device goes offline at night, your client calls you, and you call your provider. Ask about training for your team, a help centre, who answers questions and how quickly. Good support is often the difference between a platform you keep and one you replace.
8. Can you try it with your own devices?
A demo shows the best case. A pilot with your own trackers and a few real clients shows how the platform behaves in daily use. Ask for a free trial period and check that the provider helps you set up.
Red flags to avoid
- Pricing that is hidden or changes after you sign
- No pilot or trial period
- Vague answers about where data is hosted
- Long lock-in contracts with no way to export your data
- Branding limited to a logo swap
- Support that only answers by ticket with no clear response time
Score your shortlist
Give each platform a score from 1 to 5 on each of the eight questions, then add them up. Weigh the questions that matter most to your business, such as device support if you already sell a particular tracker brand, or customization if you plan to serve a niche.
Data Drive is built around these questions: white-label apps with your brand, a CMS and ERP for clients and billing, over 1,400 supported devices, custom work written by our own team, German hosting with daily backups and an audit log, and a free 14-day pilot with your own trackers.
